Why the Right Went Insane Over the Clint Eastwood Superbowl Ad

If you go by buzz there is no question that the Clint Eastwood ad “It’s Halftime in America”, for Chrysler was a Superbowl winner. It’s a great commercial that eclipses last year’s version, which itself was pretty good. It is of course the political charges by the Monday Morning quarterbacks in the Republican aparachnik, that give this spot real heat and can make it trend positively for Obama not just this week, but throughout the election season.

It’s strange, but it seems a chance series of elements coalesce to create a perfect election year narrative for Obama.

Most people will likely see this commercial for its original intent, to sell cars. Republicans are going through a “purity” phase in their party, and are so quick to witch hunt, they’ll turn on anyone who even talks about an “elephant in the room.” But while the Right may be deranged about Obama, it does know powerful political messaging when it sees it; and it gets positively nauseous when it sees a democrat benefiting from it. The Right's only conclusion can be of conspiracy, even if in this case there is no there, there.

The Right Wing has declared Psycological War on the American people! It stared with the 2008 election, with 'I hope he fails'!. Knowing they could not compete on the high level of Obama, they took the low road. Alas; enter stage right, Palin, Angle,Taitz,Bachmann, Dabbling Witches,Tea Parties,Death Panels, Birth Certifictes,Lapel Pins,999, name calling and No No No...all things Trivial and none consequential. Just perpetually promote armageddon! So, here it is three years later, and still NO... armageddon?

Their entire game plan is a giant DESTRACTION from their failed leadership and policies. And just how many times, does anybody hear them mention Bush/Cheney? they will quickly retort those guys are not in office now. But neither is Ronlad Reagan, they don't have a problem wearing that name out!

Be suckers NO more America. Put the blame where it belongs, on those that caused this mess; and cut through the bs, and vote these masters of disguise out of our goverment. They talk a good game, but they keep proving they are clueless at the task of governance. Scrutinize their RECORD and disregard their RHETORIC...after all, talk is cheap!

Clint Eastwood was only offering hope for the DAWN; and because that interferes with the gloom and doom needed to beat this President, even a conservative like Eastwood, has to be beat-down, for not following the propaganda script...

I agree... they have nothing to offer America except dysfunction, so their only hope is to set the bar way low and then drag everyone down to their level...

Excellent comment, they really have nothing to offer. Which is why I am very pleased about the Komen debacle and Handel being turfed out. That would have given them a wake up call. I think this is the beginning of the end for them.

I thought the Ad was great! Subtly done, with a statement none could or would dispute, we are America, we have accomplished much and have much more to do. The choice to save, via a loan, our automobile companies was the "right" thing to do, yet those on the "right" wanted to throw the automobile corporations and their "union" workers to the dogs, allowing foreign companies to become the providers for our transportation. Obama and his administration and the Democrats said no, rescued the auto companies and once again GM is now the world leader...

The party of "no", the Republicans, have got to go..... we need a govt who recognizes when to help and why. One that cares about the "middle class" the small business men and women of America and the thought of bringing manufacturing back to America and the jobs that come with them.

Ad impact! You bet!

The Repugnican candidates climb out of their clown car (which, sadly, is now light a few of its best clowns), fire off a few rounds into those big clown feet of theirs, then climb back into their little car and head off to the next primary venue or debate. Reload and repeat.

Its gotten to the point that the GOTP mouthparts will attack anything that isn't INSANELY RIGHT WING (redundant, I know), and one can almost smell their desperation (or is that Santorum?) . . .

As badly as they stink, it smells like VICTORY for Obama/Biden in November.

The Hummingbirds of the reich-wing have been sharpening their Long Knives since 2001, so this advertisement did not start their purge in motion, it simply gave them a rallying point.

To say that this ad made the reich-wing insane is like pouring a glass of water in the ocean and claiming that it made the ocean wet.

Teathuggishness hates the ad because one of them [Romeny] advocated to let the auto industry crash and burn.

Amazing isn't it?! Clint Eastwood, a Republican, during half time at the Super Bowl giving America a pep talk and positive message. How dare he be positive about America?!! Then we get Carl (Turdblossom) Rove coming out with criticism immediately. Can you picture Dirty Harry with the largest hand gun ever made faced off with Carl saying "make my day."

How dare anyone be positive about anything when all that will do is help re elect the Kenyan, Muslim, Black Panther in the white house? The message from the toilet bowl to the Super Bowl.

I'll just quote the Rude Pundit here:

Speaking of conservatives being @!$%#ing crazy, the outrage on the right over the Clint Eastwood-narrated Chrysler ad is beyond bizarre. Yes, there was an image from the protests at the Wisconsin capital, but that was timed with the word "discord," not "freedom" or "heroic." Otherwise, the script is a locker room pep talk, one that is inclusive as can be. One part in particular seems to grate on the right: Detroit "almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again." At some point, someone needs to say to Republicans that it's okay to have been wrong about the auto bailout. Now let's move on.
But they can't. They just can't. Karl Rove pranced onto Fox "news" to announce his displeasure, saying that the ad was "a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising." The man who helped demonize a legless Vietnam vet said he was "offended."
What this reaction says is something deeper. See, Clint Eastwood, who voted for John McCain and opposed the bank and car bailouts, thinks the whole controversy is bull@!$%#. He rewrote the script, and he's donating his pay to charity. What Rove and the rest of the right's negative reaction really means is that they are divorced from the nation as a whole. In the ad, Eastwood says that, during tough times, "we all rallied around what was right, and acted as one." We acted, in essence, like Americans.
Conservatives are saying that it's offensive to expect them to do so. And if Dirty Harry wants to wallow around with the dirty hippies, then @!$%# him, too.

Gotta love crazy as hell people...

Very moving ad. Eastwood was perfect as the speaker. It is half time, take a small break. Remember all that is dear to you. Remember how America used to be. Remember when integrity was our virtue. Remember how it was before the Republicans started a vicious bid to destroy our country so that they could regain dictatorial power. Remember the message of hope spoken by Obama. For 4 years he has battled for our country. Despite horrendous onslaught and obstructionism by the Republicans in Congress, Obama kept us moving forward. Healing takes time even without people trying to undo that healing at every step.

Personally, I have been deeply saddened. Too much I saw the greed and avarice that the Republicans and especially the TeaPublicans spewed out everywhere. But that is how evil wins. It wins by making you believe it can and has. So don't believe the messages of hate from the likes of the GOP. Don't believe that darkness rules. Believe instead in the light. It is there. Look for it and then stand up in it and fight once more.

Clint Eastwood is an American first and a Republican second.

Eastwood has voted for a Republican President every time since 1952 (even, according to him, the time he "almost" voted for Perot). Eastwood is the guy who spent nearly 10 times in legal fees what the monetary damages would be to defend against an ADA bonkers lawsuit: and won!

Clint Eastwood is the largest single landowner on the Monterey Peninsula (owning 1/3 of the Pebble Beach Company and the Tehama GC development) and is the largest support of Republican politics in the area.

Clint Eastwood epitomizes what it means to be a Republican AND he is accused of being duped by the DNC into doing a "taxpayer paid for" TV ad for an auto company that should be renamed "The Phoenix Jeep Company".

Sheesssssh!!!

Controversy over Chrysler Super Bowl ad

Rick Moran

"To be accurate, it was not an auto company bailout. It was a bailout of the unions. No doubt a buyer would have been found for both GM and Chrysler - eventually. They would have continued making cars - but with decidedly less union participation."

That is why the "conservative right" is angry....... Obama didn't bail out the auto industry....... He used taxpayer dollars to pay-off and buy more votes from the UAW! Typical democratic horse @!$%# politics.

Lets look at what GOP politicians and leaders have been Publicly calling for-

    1) Dismantling any Court that disagrees with their agenda.

    2) Forcing Rape Victims to birth the spawn of that violence!

    3) Outlawing all sex out side of Government condoned Marriage.

    4) Outlawing the use of all contraceptives.

    5) Repealing the Civil Rights Act.

    6) Repealing Child labor Laws!

    7) Executing Homosexuals!

How is a comparison to the TALIBAN not called for! They are openly campaigning for a THEOCRATIC style Government!

You can find quotes from Right wing leaders on all of these issues!!!!!

Yet you want to some how equate this with the Right wing looney tunes that go on about concentration Camps for conservatives and the left bringing in Chinese overlords. I don't know who to be more disgusted with the Theocratic nut bags or those of you with your heads in the sand jabbering on about we all just need to compromise.

One can only conclude that the right-wing is nuts. They would have preferred that GM and Chrysler fail, putting thousands upon thousands out of work; they have declared an intent to put thousands upon thousands of public sector workers out of work; they have not only done nothing to create jobs, they have blocked all efforts at job creation. Yet they decry our unemployment rate. They consider it a scandal to have so many unemployed.

I can only conclude that they're insane; there is a definite break in their thoughts and actions. They are divorced from reality.

The right-wing "went" insane because they are insane, and it's all by choice. Now, please understand that when one chooses to be insane, that becomes a marker of the level of their insanity. And stupidity.

I really, really do not want stupid and crazy people in power in my government. I do not want such people making decisions that effect my life. Nope. No thank you.

Don't you love it when any criticism of the right wing invariably ends up in the talking point that the left wing is as bad as the right wing. Does that mean someone is keeping track of criticisms on a score card and when there are more for the right the automatic response that its unfair. Which has nothing to do with the situation being discussed.

Ah... yes.... because selling cars, and saying that buying American is something for the right wing to freak out about.

I personally don't understand all this right wing hysteria! The auto bailout helped Americans, not hurt them. The car companies paid the money back to the govt., restructured and are now making some pretty nice cars. Americans are rebounding and becoming stronger.

That is the reason why I love my country. We get knocked down, we stand right back up and become stronger. Why do the right wingers have a problem with that?

Right now, I have no respect for the officials in govt. who keep this hysteria going. They are insane.

A good leader would say... "OK. so I was against the auto bailout, but I see now that it wasn't a bad thing, it worked. I might be open to that in the future... helping American busisnesses to regain our place in the golobal world."

just to be fair before some right winger flips out. WE lost a couple billion in the deal. BILLION!!!! is how the right would say it. But it was about one week in iraqs worth, to save an entire american industry that was one of the corner stones of the middle class. ANd it wasnt just the big three automakers but the entire industry around it, from the people who make brakes to sell to the automakers and repair shops, to the various businesses that support their employees.

I think it was well worth 1 week of iraqi spending, helping americans over blowing up brown people. Call me crazy but in the long run I bet we find bailing out the auto makers more valuable to america than making a bunch of enemies in iraq.

And if the American auto industry had been allowed to go under, we would have cars now made in China made by Chinese workers working 12 hour shifts a day living out of and sleeping in dorms between shifts and making $17 a day with no benefits. That is the definition of sweat shops. And those cars would be falling apart soon after they are purchased.

making $17 a day with no benefits

Making $17 a day? Who are you trying to kid, they don't make that much. /s (actually I honestly think they don't make that much, but then you could be quite correct on the amount)

Damn, you know its true. We'd all be having a choice of foreign cars instead of American ones. Crappy or total garbage, take your pick. Ugh.

Naw, I'm glad he bailed the American auto industry out with a loan. It not only saved the big 3 (although Ford did not ask for or take any money) but also saved the hundreds of thousands of auto industry related jobs. From manufacturing, to dealerships, to mechanics, and the list goes on and on.

I remember back in the 80s when the auto manufacturing plant near me closed down. Thousands were out of work. It had a real cascade effect. Darn near every small business all along Main street of all the surrounding towns closed. Even the big chain department store ended up closing down. No money, no shopping and around and around it goes. It was absolutely horrible. (same things happen when they close down military bases)

This commercial was damn good. I loved it. Political? Well I suppose if you really want to see it that way, you can put some imagination into it and make it so. However I saw it more along the lines of what Nintendo did some years back in one of their Super Bowl commercials. Anyone remember the Save the Pinata? Just brilliant advertising.

Here where I live, my entire circle is right of center and we did not think anything of the Eastwood ad. I thought the GM truck ad was a bit depressing but other than that, We did not make anything of it!! Most of us are scratching our heads about why the the political opinions of the right is making a big deal about this?? If Obama used tax payer money to produce the spot that is something different.

We are ALL about buying American as every vehicle we drive is American MADE, including my beloved Vettes!!!

Bah Humbug Matt. Give Detroit a break. At least we saved some jobs and less Americans were out of work. I think that's a postive. Give Detroit a break.

Yeah, we already did. That's kind of the issue with America - rewarding failure. Rewarding failure in finance, rewarding failure in manufacturing, rewarding failure in everything.

At least we saved some jobs and less Americans were out of work.

We saved jobs of people doing a poor job. I'm not sure that's the goal. Had Detroit been pumping out marketable cars with excellent reliability, we'd obviously want to save their jobs - but - that's simply not the case.

Had the auto industry gone under the snowball effect would have been tremendous, think about how many other industries are related, tires, electronics, many, many others....

Is that a hint of slippery slope logical fallacy I detect? Yup! It sure is. I guess if you can argue that, I can argue if they failed a new vehicle manufacturer would have swallowed up their void in the market and we'd all be driving flying cars today. After all, it's not much more of a stretch than the argument you just made.

Matt belongs to the Drag America Down contingent, a.k.a. right wing and Republican party.

That's a personal attack and a violation of the CoH. You're not attacking an argument you're addressing me directly. I hope the moderator of this seed will take appropriate measures to ensure such mental regurgitation doesn't remain on her seed. If you have anything of substance to add - consider attempting to make that argument void of personal attacks.

all you have to do is research it. The profit margin is very low for the cost of a car. even thou cars are more reliable it is more costly to repair them. in America one of the worlds largest car markets(historical) we are now at more cars then drivers on the road. Now the place where they are looking to sell cars is china. the question is How do you compete with cars that are sold over their for 2,500 or less? the average income in China is $2 a day !!!!! that Growth is limited based on that.

Now lets look at oil. it is not going to go down oil is used for every think and it is the most powerful fuel we have. BIO fuel is weaker and you get less MPG with it. They haveno replacement fuel for it. The world has reached its max production. and it is falling. The middle east is now drilling off shore and that is 10x more expensive then on land and it is a very low quality oil. the deeper you go the poorer the oil you get. Now you say what about electric cars? you still need a lot of oil for the tires it takes 9 gallons of oil to make one tire now count how many tires there are in the world.

The perfect storm is boiling that will cause horrible problems in the world.

Many of our politicians give lip service to the support of environmentalists and labor unions. Then they give consolation to the corporations by giving the corporations tax breaks to locate off shore. Of course the are reassured that bring the product back into the country will be tariff free. This is called free trade and the propaganda machines extoll the benefits of such an arrangement. It creates jobs, similar to trickle down economics. This is accomplished by our politicians who I believe benefit greatly from the affected corporations while being over paid by the voters to represent them.

I like Obamas plan of a minimum tax on multinational corporations, which will be 100% earmarked to reduce taxes for corps that make jobs at home.

Right now the corporate world enjoys the american brand, the american military and the american intelligence apparatus and the ones that use it most, dont pay a dime for it and the ones that use it the least, pay for it all.

That is ass backwards. Obama wants to fix this. To encourage corps to bring money home, to bring jobs home, as a way to reduce their minimum tax rate. No longer will they be able to reduce their tax rates by keeping profits out of the country while importing debts as we have now.

Really american tax payers are subsidizing every country that our corps decide to pay taxes in, to avoid american taxes.

We need a full commitment to turn things around for America. Eliminate tax loopholes. In their place offer tax incentives to corporations for creating jobs in America and tax incentives for "insourcing" jobs. Tax the obscene executive salaries and bonuses. If US corporations are making huge profits in this country and investing offshore and creating jobs in other countries, those profits need a higher tax rate.

Then ban Wall Street speculation on oil and food. Speculators are causing nation wide inflation for Main Street America by speculating in oil, corn, rice, wheat, sugar, coffee, etc... This idea always draws a right wing Republican response "you can't do that." YES we can. Look up the history of trading in commodities. It was attached to agriculture in the beginning. There is already a law on the books the Commodities and Futures Trade Commission is not enforcing. Forces in the market other than natural supply and demand specifically to drive prices up to make profits should be considered ILLEGAL. The problem here is the CFTC itself and all of its commissioners being ex Wall Street executives led by a Republican appointee that is against regulation.

Such a ban would cut gas prices at the pump in half over night and similarly drastically reduce food prices over night. It would be an instant bail out of Main Street requiring no taxpayer money at all.

Obama's home town and obama was hoping to secure the privilege of America hosting... to them it was a defeat against obama and they were vindicated in their contempt...

it appears to me some people on the right can only cheer when they have the opportunity to disparage others in their effort to defeat Americans of the other political party... they will even cheer their enemies in there effort to defeat Obama, Democrats or unions... there is definitely some large amount of dysfunction in all this...

I'm amazed at how perverted the republican party has become... they have politicized everything and then play the victim when anyone but them tries to say anything good about America...

Bush and Cheney taking that 90 percent popularity after 9/11, lying their butts off and invading Iraq = Republican bad. Bill Clinton having extra martial sex = Democrat bad. Agent 57,

I was thinking the same thing.

Only Conservatives would destroy the country they live in so a Republican President can be elected

Only Conservatives would rally against the Olympics coming to the country they live in because they don't like the President

Only Conservatives would malign the revival of an American auto industry because they don't like the Stimulus

Only Conservatives would rail against the Stimulus, then use that same Stimulus to prop up their own budgets in the short-term

Only Conservatives would create a lie (Christmas tree tax) to prevent an industry (live Christmas trees) from competing with artificial trees and provide seasonal jobs to Americans

Only Conservatives would whine about corruption in government, then cheer as the Supreme Court affirms the Citizens United ruling

We the Voters made a major mistake by allowing this poison to take over the House and have filibuster power over the Senate in 2010. It's time to rectify that error starting this November and continuing the fight until this nightmare is nothing but a horrible footnote in American political history.

Republicans don't give a sh*t about the average American worker.

In fact, they celebrate the 30+ year devaluation of the American worker, and the stratospheric rise of those who siphoned away that value for their own profit, as evident by their continuing support for supply-side "voodoo" economics.

Is this the Wizard of Oz and Over the Rainbow? Then you have to keep clicking your heels to make it come true.

I have issues with both parties but it is on an issue by issue basis. We do need a multi party system instead of a "bipolar" - extremely partisan politics and government.

            I'll be honest.

I saw it live and I immediately thought it was a castigation of the Tea Party.

When an ad refers to the divisiveness of our country, who else would they be referring to other than the people who are insanely anti-everything?

It's really telling that Republicans also assumed that the ad was a swipe at them. That really says it all, doesn't it?

I don't know why they're whining that they're being called out for their behavior. Their very intent was to be divisive. They should be proud that their actions made them part of the Super Bowl.

And just like so many Republicans-especially Reagan-Clint Eastwood never served in combat. He did his entire Army stint in California. He may be a tough guy on the big screen, but he's just a yahoo everywhere else. But then, Republicans are so desperate for attention and respect that they'll cling to anything and ride on anyone's coattails to look cool.

I wasn't aware that he'd given it all to charity.

Was Eastwood, a lifelong Republican who has said he’s voted only for Republican presidents since 1952, casting his lot with President Obama and the auto industrys bailout? Just what was the subtext and motive? Eastwood is being characteristically tight-lipped, but did make one thing perfectly clear: he’s donating “anything they gave me” to charity.

The thing is, he can be a Republican but still be against the tactics of today's Republicans.

I don't think he would have done that ad if he was happy with the games that are being played in his party.

The Republican Party has taken a hard right turn as of 2010 with Teapublicans getting elected. They have been making many concessions to the right wing for several years now, and it does seem to be alienating Republican moderates, independents and cross over voters. This is probably as big or bigger than the right wing voting block, but no one seems to be focused on them. My wild guess is that they will either not show up to vote in 2012 for Mitt and a right wing VP candidate, Newt (a corrupt adulterer) or Rick (a far right wing fundamentalist).

At this point in the year, you would expect all of the candidates still in the race giving it their best shots to sell themselves and boosting them in the polls. The latest polls I have seen have indicated a substantial Obama lead over Romney, a very substantial lead over Newt and a very substantial lead over Santorum. This should be their high water mark and it isn't.

Maybe Republicans need to listen to Dirty Harry.

I could suggest that they move back toward the middle, but who will listen?

I could suggest stop obstructing and come up with some real jobs programs, not make believe trickle down programs, but who would listen? I could suggest that they update their economic concepts to the 21st century but they are stuck in their 1980's trickle down dogma and 1920's deregulation dogma. Who will listen? Here we are in 2012 with Republican candidates calling for the elimination of the minimum wage (Bachmann) or calling Obama the Food Stamp President and recommending black American kids work (Newt) or fixate on sexuality issues (Santorum) and no separation of church and state (Perry). In short REGRESSIVES.

They are not connecting with mainstream America

But they are not listening. They are not going to change short of a huge backlash in 2012 elections.

Chrysler followed a perfect solution for mass market media. The ad was sufficiently vague and as a result viewers can insert their own biases and emotions. If you read the text it is an optimistic outlook from a tough game. I am amazed at the things people are reading in to it as the things are not implied in the ad. That is the essence of writing good pop songs as well. The goal is to me all things to all people by not being specific. It is particularly brilliant is this regard.

Sure it was an ad but it fostered discussion. Much like the apple 1984 ad. Sometimes even ads are art.

In this case, the chrystler AD reminded us that Detroit is alive and thriving DUE TO GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION which the right claim never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever works. ANd you know, it only takes one failure to kill a theory.

Remember when the Reagan campaign tried to use Bruce Springstein's and John Mellancamp's music to appeal to the blue collar workers whom they were about to shaft?

How many times do celebrities from every field have to keep sending warning letters to Republicans not to use their music or catch phrases because they do not agree with their politics.

So there was already sour grapes on the Right about being limited to marching band standards, country & western music, corporate celebrities and D list former liberal stars who became Christian with a vengeance as fame waned.

Then Dirty Harry (who still wins hearts young and old) goes touting for one of America's greatest come-back stories in manufacturing which just so happened while the Al Green-crooning, black president was in power.

Their cool-quotent went way down. And they are well aware what will happen if young people come out to vote.

I do find it interesting that republicans to this day dont ask permission to use music, when they have been publicly embarrassed time and time and time again, as the famous artist who probably would have stayed out of politics and keep their mouths shut, suddenly get on TV to explain how their music is actually anti republican ideals.

            It's quite baffling.

What is grinding them is that an advertisement for a car company, with a spokesman that is not only famous but a prominent Republican, is telling the largest viewer mass that "Things are getting better, look at the auto industry".

Those same Republicans that fought against and had many, many quotes thrown about the bailout of Detroit will not only see another term of Obama, but possibly the loss of control and their own jobs. They @!$%#ed up by not getting behind the auto bailout, just another economic blunder by the Republicans. How many more bad decisions do they have to make before people see the damage caused by this Congress?

How many more bad decisions do they have to make before people see the damage caused by this Congress?

I think this comment exemplifies the blind partisanship of the left. When Obama's policies weren't working - it was because of the Republican controlled congress. When the economy starts to show upward trends...Then suddenly Obama is credited with turning it around. It doesn't make a bit of logical sense.

Obama has been Obama the entire time he's been in office. The economy didn't show signs of life until Republicans took control of the house.

When the policies Obama passed didn't work it was because of Republicans. Then more Republicans get elected and Obama is praised for the resulting economic turn-around. Complete and utter blind partisanship. It's quite asinine.

                Factually incorrect: http://www.bea.gov/briefrm/gdp.htm

In fact, we can see the GDP never even went negative until 2008. Prior to that the GDP was growing extremely fast until the Democrats took control of the house in 2006. Then when we had all three controlled by the Democrats it started dipping into negative growth. Scary.

And...Growth was decreasing until Republicans had a quarter in the house at which point it started rebounding.

Ahhhhh........ What? The democrats lost control of the house big-time in 2010. The house is where the money is appropriated! Bush was not President in 2009, the democrats had control of the purse strings the last half of Bush's Presidency and the first half of Obama's Presidency. Go figure!

                  Ya ...... What alright

What Was the U.S. GDP Then?

Real GDP returned in 2010 when the Republicans returned to power in many states and in the House of Representatives.

So now what exactly did Bush do to "kill" the economy?

FYI: Economic policies produce results at least a few months after those policies are enacted. How could the repubs have passed any policies or produced any results in 2010 when they started in their jobs with their new majority in the house of reps in January 2011??

The US economy in January 2009 was in a nightmarish free fall and the repubs expected the democrats to turn a huge economy around in one day.

What?!? The Democrats had control of the house since 2006. Being in free-fall in 2009 was THEIR fault. Before 2006, the Economy was booming! 2006 comes around - Dems take control of the house it started growing slower, eventually becoming stagnated. By 2008, after 2 years of a Dem controlled house, it went flat negative growth.

BS on who had the majority in the house. Dems lost the majority to the Republicans in 1995. The Republicans held that majority until 2007 and regained it in 2011.

The Republican party gained control half way through Clinton's first term as president and held onto it three quarters of the way through the Bush (43) presidency.

Republicans have had complete control of the house 13 of the last 17 years.

                  http://artandhistory.house.gov/house_history/partyDiv.aspx

United states Senate gained a Republican majority in 1995. They maintained that majority until 2001 when it became equally divided 50/50 between the two parties. Then 50 Dems, 49 Republicans, 1 Independent for the later half of that year. (2001)

Republicans regain majority in November of 2002 and kept it until 2009. Again the Republican party has had control of the senate 13 of the last 17 years.

I'm pretty sure, that's what EVERYONE here is saying. Coincidentally, 2007 is when the economy collapsed, 2011 is when it started to recover.

The Republican party gained control half way through Clinton's first term as president and held onto it three quarters of the way through the Bush (43) presidency.

Interestingly enough, this is when the economy was booming.

Republicans have had complete control of the house 13 of the last 17 years.

And in those 4/17 years, the economy collapsed.

Can you list the laws that the democrats passed over bush's veto that caused the economy to go into a free fall?

Not any more than you can prove anything the Democrats passed have contributed to a recovery. Which is why these comments are such perfect examples of the left's blind partisanship.

11 Months after Democrats took control of the house.

                      ended in June of 2009

The NBER said it ended at the first positive GDP numbers. Those numbers again, began declining in Q1 of 2010 and continued to decline until Republicans got some time in the house. Q3 of 2010.

I thought it was a great commercial!

At work, I listen to right wing talk radio just to trip. It is insane how many righties have their panties in a twist over this ad. One woman called and said that she's always been a CE fan, but now she's going to throw all of his movies away. Another caller claims he's going to call for a boycott of CE movies. Really???

My issue is this - even if this was an ad for Pres. Obama, so what? Are people only allowed to have opinions that match yours? There are lots of celebrities that are @!$%#s (in my opinion) but that would not stop me from enjoying their movies/music.

Not to mention that if this ad was seemingly endorsing one of their guys, CE would be sooooo smart and soooo politically savvy. They'd be talking about what a great American he is. Good grief!!

I finally saw that ad this morning. To fall to pieces that this is some sort of pro-Obama piece is absurd on one hand but it also draws attention to something the ad never explicitly states: that the auto industry owes its life to the President. The urge for right wingers to piss and moan about the silliest of things is so strong that it completely obliterates what little rational thought they're capable of. The politically smart thing to have done is completely ignore this ad. Now they've done a great favor to Dems who can say, why yes, thanks for reminding the country that it was President Obama who did that. But stupidity and incompetence have become core organizing principles of the Republican party and the right wing in general. And I, for one, am grateful. For example, R-money's actually providing daily copy and video for all the Dem ads that will come later this year. They won't have enough time or money to get them all in, there's so much material.

I wonder what Mitt Romney had to say about this Detroit automaker ad. His Dad was the CEO of AMC, which at one time in 1987, became AMC Chrysler, and now Mitt's trying to resurrect it by becoming,

                      "THE NEW RAMBLER".

Maybe it was aimed at Mitt just a little.
