Many older women often worry about whether to dye their hair or not. But it shouldn't be any kind of issue. Dying one's hair is like any fashion statement: we go with what makes us comfortable. We do not have any angst about dying our hair in different shades when we are younger. We do it even without thinking to experiment, to be in vogue, or to keep a certain shade fresh and attractive. Getting older should be no different in that regard.

I love my age and am actually enjoying getting older. I do not have any wish to be back in my younger days, neither do I envy others the age they might be. My hair has been greying only at the front, just above my forehead, nowhere else. I find that pretty annoying, as I would like it to be either all grey or all black. So, clearly as a matter of choice, I dye my hair for consistency. When it is all grey, I will probably keep it that way.

I think the way we look is highly related to the way we feel about ourselves, the mood we are in or the desire to experiment. When it comes to new clothes or a new hairstyle, we should not get into fossilised, unmoving ways of restricting our choices. We should do whatever feels natural, comfortable and beautiful. the essence of being is to live who we wish to be. Life is too short to be rigidly sticking to anything to prove a point, to conform to expectations or to please anyone else. Live it, I say, to the max, and if dyeing your hair is part of that objective, just go for it and wear it with pride!

My opinion: It all kinda depends. Some women look better with their hair dyed, others look better gray.

now, this is absolutely true for the "two standard deviations from the mean" crowd. about 10-20% of people are absolutely gonna look better dying, and about 10-20% absolutely need to let it go gray.

for the rest of us, it's somewhere in the bell curve to varying degrees.

BIG FACTOR: the quality of the dye job. If you're gonna be fake, you gotta spend some cash and invest some time so that your fakeness looks at least plausibly natural to some extent. the minute that your dyed hair looks dyed and you can't make it look natural enough...that's when you outghta just go gray.

Wonderful comment that covers all angles, greck. Can't argue with any of that.

Absolutely. I don't know if it is because we are brainwashed to see men with grey hair as 'distinguished' looking but, somehow, men with dyed hair look phoney to me and look much better natural.

But probably that's juts me.:o)

I've got a wife who's quite adept at making it all look natural. I've been studying the work of a master for years now.

men with dyed hair look phoney to me and look much better natural.

yeah, I think we have a combination of a few things there:
1) male privilege
2) biology (men can reproduce well into later life and thus don't need to look young to be a viable breeding partner)
3) most men wouldn't take the time and caring to do a decent dye job. We simply don't spend that much time grooming ourselves.

Go gray naturally. I went the "Loving Care" route for many years, as I began to turn gray early. What a time consuming, fruitless, adventure. Finally in my early 50's I stopped abusing myself, and accepted my lovely silver hair. Pixie cut and Natural.

Good on you, Bibi!

My take: each of us has to wear whatever version of ourselves makes us most comfortable and confident out into the world in order to get by in life.

If that means spending an hour on makeup or six hours a week at the gym...so be it. If you are at peace with the unaltered path nature takes you on, even better.

I don't fault people for making cosmetic changes to their bodies. It's a funny thing, but in all other aspects of life we respect people more for what they work for and earn than what they inherit. Yet somehow working hard and earning a set of DD boobs is wrong...it just doesn't make sense.

Absolutely, greck! We cannot live someone else's life because lifestyle is dictated by mindset, seeing the world as another person does, which is often not possible!

hair! i hear the word and the first thing i think of is george carlin and his view concerning hair. thus i bring to you georges poem dedicated to hair. ( a short beard poem is here as well)

I'm aware some stare at my hair. In fact, to be fair, Some really despair of my hair.

But I don't care,Cause they're not aware,Nor are they devonaire.In fact, they're just square.

They see hair down to there,Say, "Beware" and go off on a tear!I say, "No fair!"

A head that's bare is really nowhere. So be like a bear, be fair with your hair!

Show it you care.Wear it to there.Or to there.Or to there, if you dare!

My wife bought some hair at a fair, to use as a spare. Did I care?Au contraire!Spare hair is fair!

In fact, hair can be rare.Fred Astair got no hair,Nor does a chair,Nor nor a chocolate eclair,And where is the hair on a pear?

Nowhere, mon frere!
So now that I've shared this affair of the hair,I'm going to repair to my lair and use Nair, do you care?

(Beard Poem)

Here's my beard.Ain't it wierd?Don't be sceered,Just a beard.

My grey is nicely silver. If it weren't...I might dye. I wanted a silver chignon but grew weary of the bulk of long hair. Now cut in a "Robin Roberts" short short do! (My sister, 7 years my senior, colors hers and then streaks purple across the front.)

Earned every grey, it's a sign of distinction.

I would say the same to women, don't hide your grey, embrace them and make the look work for you, better natural than dyed...

Never dyed my hair (except for one show, and that was black hair spray for King and I) and I never plan to. Grey hides well in dirty blonde hair, plus with all the stress from my daughter's school (doesn't want to do homework, yadda yadda), there will be no hair left to go grey after I pull it all out!

Well, it depends on what color the gray is. I'd love to let my hair go gray, but my gray is really ugly, spotty. At least since I don't have dark hair, I can go much longer without coloring. But the really bizarre thing about my hair is, no matter how dark I color it (I've actually gone as dark as light brown), within two weeks it's light blond! Guess my blond roots run REALLY deep, LOL.

I'm just not ready for gray or white hair. It doesn't fit me-even at 57.

"Church lady" hair does fascinate me though.....and I can't stand the way some older women cut their hair off at the back of their neck, and sort of shave it upwards!!!!

I have seen a few attractive silver/white hairstyles. It's all about personal preference.

I am was a blond most of my life, as it darkened I started getting it weaved. I do it twice a year and it blends well enough to last. I don't like the dirty blond that comes in but at some point I will probably let it go au naturel. My mom let her hair grow in naturally after it fell out with chemo and it is the first time in my life I've seen her natural color (she was a blond), now a brunettish dirty blond. Very little grey, yea!. So it took her til age 80, I might last that long.

It's a race Ms Cyprah, I'm graying but it is falling out maintaining a lighter color and very thin, and some grey.

It really depends if you (the person) find the change to your liking - letting nature do its thing or you doing your thing, or both you and nature partnering together to make what ever thing you like.

It's up to the person.

Yes, there have been some eye-popping out moments where I just remember what Mother used to say, "If you don't have something good to say, don't say it at all".

I started going grey at age 18. One here and there. Finally it just got too hard pulling them all out, so I decided to "streak" my hair. Well what a freakin' pain! I only did that once. Since about age 30, I've been dying my hair.

I've seen some beautiful women with gorgeous grey hair and it works for them. I've seen others that look really washed out, so obviously they should consider dying. I think I wouldn't look good with totally grey hair, and yet, I noticed that I'm too old for that dark color. So, I've gone lighter shades of brown and it's working well for me.

Sticking with it as long as I can, and will adjust the color accordingly.

My favorite hair color is a silver white. I had a neighbor once in her seventies with the most beautiful silver white hair. It looked like snow and I just wanted to touch it.

I'm fifty, and if I have grey hair I don't know it. My hair is naturally blond and maybe the grey blends in with the blond. Who knows. If it does turn, I hope it's silver white like my neighbor.

I've been dyeing my hair since I was 17 so I can't say too much about coloring vs gray. BUT in the last 6 months I've had a handful of grays pop up in the front-right section of my forehead. I was going to leave them alone-ish and then accidentally dyed my hair burgundy for Christmas. (oops) Now I figure I'll leave them covered up until either a) I'm in my 30s or b) I have kids and can "blame" them for the grays. If I go with option B I'll have to swear my hairdresser to secrecy since she's the one who spotted the grays in the first place. :)

the hair dye interacts with my medications, and makes my hair fall out, so I am going gray naturally, and will stay that way. I'd rather have hair, even if gray, than no hair. :-)

My mother, who, at 81 is still a natural dark blond, hates my hair, because she think it makes HER look old. But I like it-- I think it looks 'distinguished'. :-)

I started coloring my hair maybe 14 years ago..I had had dark brown hair but there was a little grey. Then a lot of grey and within a couple of years I was having to color it once a month and the dyes were really harsh on my hair. I hated it. By that time I was using a light brown color because as I aged, the dark color looked awful with my complexion and years.

Finally about two years ago, I said enough. My hair was fairly long, to the middle of my shoulder blades, but the dye had it in bad condition. I stopped coloring and had my hair cut off really short (and my neck is STILL cold!!!) But now, I'm a salt and pepper, my hair is even shorter (in a pixie) and it's amazing how little time I spend on it AND I don't mind the wind, now. I HATED having my hair "fixed" and then have to go into the wind which would mess it up.

I miss my pretty dark brown hair and the length.. but then I also miss my youthful figure.. but I'll be 73 soon and at least I don't have to spend almost an hour in the mornings "doing" my hair.. BIG smile! Besides, I've watched my older sister and brother and how their hair color has changed. I'm following the same greying pattern and in a few years, it will be as their's is now.. a pretty white.

I'm with you Piletre. I've always had my hair at my chin or longer but a few months ago I cut it very short. Wow, what a difference. No more getting my hair stuck on my lip gloss. No more shutting my hair in the car door on a windy day. No more "Medusa syndrome" on dry days. It only takes five minuets to style and it looks great too. It brings out my cheekbones, lengthens my neck, thins my face and makes me look five years younger. I'll never go long again.

I think there's a lot to factor in here. I started going grey [the silvery type grey] @ only 16!!! So, I think age has a lot to do with it... Then, there's the "I'm not ready to be grey" group... That's me now @ 33. I have some silvery roots now, but I don't think I'm totally ready to let it fly. I think I'll be a bit more accepting of my silver after 40.

I know some that look better with their silvery locks then their younger color.

My natural color is DARK brown [almost black] with lots of salt [for my age]. I'm glad it's the silvery [glistening] grey, but I'm so not ready to let it fly yet. I do however, love my hair otherwise. It's got body, but it's not curly. It's thick, but not unmanagable. I have a lot of hair, but not too much for my head. I can sport a short cut or a med-long cut and I get compliments. I can have my hair bright flaming red or a natural brown or black or dark dirty blond or all of them in streaks... Still get compliments.

All my life my hair was thick and to my waist, a chestnut brown. I was still young when a few greys came in, I touched it up a little, then a lot. I decided I didn't want to dye it anymore, but what to do? So I had my head buzzed to about two inches long all over. I will say that my husband had a fit! It took a long time to grow it long again, but I had fun spiking it with colors and all kinds of styles as it grew, with many cuttings along the way. Now it is shoulder length and almost all silver. I simply wanted to know what I looked like, what the Lord had wrought, so to speak. I am okay with it.
