During the late Nineties, when Bill Clinton’s tawdry liaisons with the young White House intern Monica Lewinsky  were exposed, U.S. politicians were divided on how best to deal with the scandal.

One group thought it prudent to bury the matter under the Oval Office carpet as quickly as possible and move on.

But another, led by the most powerful man on Capitol Hill - firebrand House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich - demanded that the President must be removed from office for lying on oath about the affair.

Unfortunately for 68-year-old Gingrich, however, most Bible-thumping Middle Americans like their Presidents to be squeaky-clean family types — and even before his second wife’s dramatic intervention, his character flaws were proving an encumbrance.

He was slaughtered for accepting $1.6 million in consultancy fees from the government mortgage broker Freddie Mac at the height of the sub-prime loans scandal that helped precipitate the credit crunch; and for serious ethical violations during his tenure as Speaker of the House that cost him $300,000 in fines.

I agree, not only because of his affairs, multiple marriages, lies and ethics issues.. he's so far right moderate republicans, independents, and of course democrats will not vote for him, then throw in a large portion of evangelicals... he's toast... and will only garner the votes of the racists, bigots, and RWNJ's....

the religious right is very hypocritical. It may very well over look Newts greed and his treatment of women .

One of the comments to the article (paraphrased) was "we'll take a penitent adulterer over an unrepentant liberal anyday." I am afraid that the religious extremists put far too much weight on Gingrich's conversion to Catholicism and apparent fidelity to Calista, and not nearly enough on the whole picture. What they fail to recognize is that even if Newt has remained faithful in his marriage for the last 12 years (HAS he?) he has continued to screw the American people with impunity, witness his lobbying efforts which he pretends was historical work. Much like he pretends oral sex is not infidelity.

Americans are a puritanical society - which means that we pretend to forbid sex because the forbidding part is what is the turn on.

His tawdry past is probably the sexiest part of his candidacy and his infidelity will endear him to the voters.

He released a political manifesto designed to appeal to the Christian Right, Rediscovering God In America, and repented his sins on the nation’s most influential religious radio programme, saying he had ‘got on my knees and prayed to God for forgiveness’.

When a Republican candidate commits or has committed a sin then ask God for forgiveness, the Evangelicals and the Religious Right will forgive that Republican, vote for him or her and ask their friends to vote for that Republican.

When a Democratic candidate commits or has committed a sin then ask God for forgiveness, the Evangelicals and the Religious Right will never forgive that Democrat, never vote for him or her and ask their friends to vote against that Democrat.

IMHO In a race between satan (R) and Jesus (D) the Evangelicals and the Religious Right would vote for for satan (R).

The Evangelicals and the Religious Right are stuck on stupid and hypocrisy.
