A mentally ill grandfather died after police officers strapped him naked to a chair, smothered him with a 'spit hood' and pepper-sprayed him 10 times during a 43-hour ordeal, it has been claimed.

Nick Christie, 62, was allegedly tortured in the 'Devil's Chair' at Lee County jail after being detained by Florida police officers in March 2009 following a 'mental breakdown'.

The hood, designed to stop him from spitting at officers, meant he could not escape the noxious spray's fumes - and he was never allowed to clean the residue from his body.

His family is now suing Lee County Sheriff's Department for 'wrongful death'.

This is sadism, it represents the moral mindset of people who call themselves law enforcement personnel. This, which is above, is a pure example of this, primarily of police officials who are in reality, sociopaths who have migrated into this design. The screening process for those who enter this field is inadequate and the people are poorly trained and usually have deep-seated mental problems that are not served properly in this field. It takes only 16 weeks of training in a community college in many states and this terrible example is actually occurring more often then we wish to realize. Very good article, please continue. pardon me, I firmly believe that there are many competent police officials, it is just that, as our moral mindset is so closed minded and the population increasing is this so evident. Peace

Christie was first arrested on March 25 for being drunk in a public place. This has subsequently been contested as he may merely have been in a severely confused state.

He was released after telling jail attendants of his various medical conditions. Two days later, on March 27, he was arrested for trespassing at the hotel where he was staying.

Nicholas DiCello, whose Cleveland firm Spangenberg Shibley & Liber has filed a civil rights lawsuit on behalf of his estate, said it was a 'minor' offence.

He said: 'He was having another mental episode. He was bewildered, acting crazy, and so the hotel got fed up and asked him to leave. When he didn't go, they called the police.'

Not even an offense that they normally lock people up for... Lots of officers in America having bad days lately...

IMO.. They should all be charged with first degree murder in this case since their actions were premeditated not accidental .. They all knew what they were doing before they did it & that their actions could cause great bodily harm.. And it did !!!

At the very least, the officers direclty involved in Mr. Christie's death should be charged with second degree murder, and their superiors should be arrested for aiding and abetting the crimes. Why is the local state police and/or FBI not investigating the obvious attempt to cover up the crimes?

Sadly it will not happen, I have past experience and the "Code Of Blue" will prevent that. These people will be transferred to another facility and they will continue. In reality the police union is one of the strongest in the United States. For an interesting slant on this subject, I suggest you look up LEAP on your computer, it is present and past law enforcement officials who now oppose this kind of treatment. The Code Of Blue is very dangerous and powerful, peace once again.
