Is Stress Affecting Your Daily Life? 6 Sure Ways To Tell...

Stress tends to creep up on us without us realising it because our home (especially relationships) and our jobs (money) often take their toll as we try to balance domestic responsibilities with work ones. But living with undue stress is not an option. It keeps us in an agitated state, weakens our immune system and ultimately kills. Not a good place to be. If you;re not sure just how stressed you are, there are six significant signs which show that stress is affecting your daily life:

1. Constant worry and anxiety: If you get up each day with a frown, or even a headache, and the first thing you do is to worry about tasks in the day instead of giving thanks just to be alive, you are under stress. When you cannot see a way out, have a personality clash with the boss, or find yourself constantly finding fault/having arguments with your partner, shouting at the children or finding it difficult to simply relax, you are under immense stress.

2. Feeling overwhelmed: At these times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed, to feel as though the world is on your shoulders. It then makes you feel impotent, vulnerable and lacking in the energy and strength to complete simple tasks. Everything becomes a burden or a chore instead of being enjoyable.

3. Lack of focus: It is difficult to focus on any one thing, or for any length of time, because so many things need your attention. Your attention span becomes shorter and shorter, you tend to daydream a lot, to worry more and to act less as fear becomes the overriding factor in your life.

4. A feeling of not being able to do anything right: This is the time you also feel under the microscope, as if everyone is watching everything falling around you. It is also the time that partners and bosses are likely to become more critical and unappreciative of your efforts, especially when you would be trying so hard too. As you are unable to focus, you are likely to make more mistakes while your desire to please is likely to go unrecognised.

5. Feeling isolated and alone: Being stressed is a very isolating time because we tend to bear it stoically instead of sharing it with others until we are forced to. When we are stressed, we tend to retreat into ourselves to cope, rather than seeking help and that increases our fears and vulnerability.

6. Inability to sleep well: It is difficult to sleep when you are worried, which simply aggravates everything else; makes you tired and lethargic and even more irritable with others. Yet adequate sleep is important to boost that feeling of competence and strength.

The main ways to overcome stress are to:

a. Face your fears and anxieties. Whatever they are, face them head on and examine your options. Once you face them, solutions usually surface. If the main problem is your job, then talk to your boss or try to get another job. But doing nothing is not an option.
b. Talk to your partner/children and enlist their help, especially if you might have too much to do. Emphasise how you actually feel about your life and the way things are going.
c. Take time-out for yourself, regularly. Sometimes we can go on working like robots when just taking time to do something different, to pamper ourselves, say once per week, and to have quality time with our family could go a long way to reducing the feeling of stress and restoring some magic into our lives.
d. Learn to relax and pay attention to priorities instead of every little minor thing. Today will continue with or without you. Don't try to control everything. Let it go while you simply do your best. Once you learn to let go, things have a way of sorting themselves out too.

Wow I had to say yes to each one. I've tried all of the remedies A,C,D can't do B since I don't have a partner. So if I went to my family which all they really said was go see a therapist :( , which I can't afford.

Most people feel stressed because they mistakenly believe they have to control everything to make it work and that if they worry, things might get better! But neither is true. That's wasted energy and if they were no longer in that situation, life would still go on - and even better too! :o)

Very true Ms Cyprah, and I agree about the wasted energy. My biggest issue is that I try to analyze everything too much, including events that really don't need it, or shouldn't be analyzed. What really stresses me out is something where I can analyze an event, determine the risk, however because I can't predict an outcome, I try to figure out yet the tiniest details, and the loop keeps continuning. Guess that fits under control also :)

Rygar-

Check out NAMI in your state. Their therapy classes are free and might be of help to you if you need it.

really helpful, i've seen it written that if the situation is under your control, fix it, do something about it. if the situation is totally out of your ability to do anything then learn to laugh it off, let it go and let those who can take care of it do what needs to be done. worry is the interest we pay for things that either haven't happened yet or have no control over, and who really wants to pay interest on anything.

6. But it has nothing to do with stress or anxiety. I just have a problem sleeping at nights.

I used to be anxious all the time, and stressed to the point of screaming into my pillow at night, unable to sleep.I took anti-anxiety medication for years with minimal results. I was upset and angry all the time, worried about other people's actions, feelings, and beliefs. I took my rage out on a number of people/groups that didn't deserve it, and spent a lot of time casting judgement on others for their life choices.

Marijuana fixed all of that. Whether the drug itself or the fact that it calmed me down enough to actually think deeply about my problems, my life, and the stress I was putting on myself daily. I haven't had to take anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication in about 4 years now, and I would rate my life as stress-free, and extremely happy almost all the time. I am finally in a healthy relationship with a woman who appreciates who I am, and that I love very deeply. I no longer hate people... thank goodness, and have become far more accepting of other's lifestyles. I am no longer a homophobe, and I no longer project my insecurities on other people in order to hate them when I was really just hating myself.

Of course since Marijuana is illegal in most states, people have to make their own life choices. I just know that I for one no longer have to say YES to ANY of these 6 items, whereas before I could easily say HELL YES to all 6.

I think the main reason was that it made me take a deep look inwardly, instead of being so focused on other people and their thoughts and actions. I didn't like at all what I saw, and therefore was able to make a change.

Maybe not as inspirational as someone who did it all while still under the influence of the chemicals in their brain instead of the one's from a plant, but it got the job done, and no one on this planet could ever convince me that it was the wrong thing to do =P, my result speak for themselves in my mind heh. After all, I can remember how miserable I was every single day... just wanting it to be over more than anything else because I was just so damn unhappy. Of course one day of bad luck could have sent me to jail, and therefore ruined my life instead of me being a healthy, happy, and productive member of society I'd be sitting and rotting while the rest of the US pay for me to be there. So... yeah... legalize already. =P

I seem to be under stress but my day job is so uneventful and boring I find it hard to believe I'm under stress so badly. I think I'm just naturally stressed i.e. unhappy without stress? Is that possible?

Yes, it is, Holly, because it relates to your basic emotional feelings not being in alignment.

I can sympathise with that! My children took sides in our break-up and haven't spoken to me since. It means that, even though I am very happy with my life, the underlying stress relating to their action hasn't been resolved so I do feel like that sometimes, unhappy but without any stress. I know it will be resolved in time. It's just the feeling of impotence I get sometimes to do anything about it! So I do understand your feelings.

JGL, if it works for you, that's the main thing! :o)

5 of the symptoms. I am a complete, exposed, raw nerve. I do sleep well at night when I finally turn out the light around 1:00am. I just dread sleep, because before ya know it, morning is here, and the circus starts all over again.

How sad for you. I have to say that I really enjoy my sleep because I love my work and look forward to each new day!
