A magnified dust mite!!

Advertise | AdChoices

Research at Kingston University in the UK have found out that by not making your bed, you would be far healthier than making it every day. I came upon this piece by accident while surfing the Net.

It seems that over a million microscopic dust mites inhabit our beds. They thrive on the moisture from the atmosphere and beds that are made help to keep that moisture in them giving the mites a nice breeding ground. However, when the beds are not made, the moisture gets a chance to dry out and the mites can't cope with the dry atmosphere so they eventually "dehydrate and dry", which is far healthier for us.

This is an important finding because the mites are not harmless. They actually cause asthma and other allergies costing the NHS over £700 million per year ($117m).

Personally, I am very pleased to know this because when I was very ill and lethargic, I stopped making my bed too often and just left it to air, but I used to get guilty feelings about that, as I love to see a neat bed! But it seems that, unknowingly, and unwittingly, I was actually doing myself a big favour by not being too fussy, especially being an asthma sufferer with a few allergies as well.

The research is continuing to find even more answers for us.

Do you make your bed daily? Are you a fuss pot with it?

I only make the bed when I change the sheets. No one sees our bedroom since it is on the 3rd floor so I don't bother. We just throw the sheets back and leave them that way. Now I can say I do it for "health" reasons, and not just because I'm lazy *grin*!

Wow, I must be the healthiest person in the whole USA. I hate making my bed and am another who only fusses over the bed when I change the sheets. Then it's to make sure I'm going to be comfortable, not to make it look ultra-neat.

People make their beds? Egads! Not I thank you..well when I change the sheets but that's it. Besides in order to make the bed I would have to wake my wife up early, shudder, that ain't happening! <G>

I make my bed everyday and I change my sheets at least once a week.

I kind of liked the beds in England (much of Europe does it this way) where you have a fitted bottom sheet and the "top sheet" is a duvet cover that you pull off and wash with the rest of the sheets. "Making the bed" is just straightening the duvet, which can be done two seconds before company arrives *grin*. It did take me a while to learn the secrets of getting the duvet INTO the cover...but after that it was a pretty easy affair. Our American beds are over dressed.

Love your comment, kaviaq, because that's exactly as it is here. Easy to throw the duvet over when guests are coming! :o)

I respect his research, but a simple bed covering over regularly cleaned sheets should also help to eliminate most problems. Keep it simple.

My problem, I love love love seeing a made bed, and love getting into a made bed at night! So uh... how do I deal?

Bliss to me is clean sheets... I will start washing them more I guess!

I have sheets and a duvet, plus cotton thin quilt so making the bed only involves a quick pull up, and pillow plumping.

I do like a made bed, it is so inviting looking. So now just make it up before you go to bed, while you are doing the evening wind down, and get the best of both!

Well, I feel this article was written by someone who does not want to make his or her bed. Dust mites live on most fabrics covered or not. Like cockroaches - impossible to rid the earth of them. No reason to be anal about making a bed, but equally no reason to dismiss the appreciation for the aesthetic and healthy features of a neat home. ;]

I suspect most mothers would agree.

That picture of the magnified mite is scary. I hate to think I am sharing my bed with the likes of that bad boy and his buddies! =0
