Which one would you give up?

This would be a difficult choice for me because each of them serves their own purpose when the time is right. But, as I spend a lot of time on the computer these days, the choice would have to be the television as I am watching that less and less. There was a time when it would have been difficult to prise myself away from the box, but I mainly use it now to watch the news, special documentaries or particularly interesting dramas.
But which one could you do without?
I'm a much happier person when living in a home with no television.
Well..... It just is. An occasional television program is alright and such, but most of the time I find a television to be an obnoxious racket-maker. I get a lot more entertainment out of watching birds, or kids, or even flowers dancing in the wind. It's easy enough for me to 'just not turn it on'. I try to tune it out when others are watching it, usually. That works sometimes. ;-)
Did this get published accidentally? I figured there would have been a poll.
Anyway... I would give up TV. If I don't have the internet, I feel like I have no connection to the world. If I have no cell phone I can't get in touch with people.
TV is just a time waster.
I'm going to have to say my internet would be the one I'd have to keep because:
I have to have my World of Warcraft
I can keep in touch with anyone on line as well as i can with my cell phone, thanks to the many voice chat programs out there
I have WinTV installed on my computer (saves arguements with the kids when I want to watch something) so i can watch (and record) anything I'd see on regular tv
I'm with you. I could probably get rid of my TV right now and still find everything I want to watch on the computer.
I'd give up the tv before phone or internet, but unlike others here it would not be such an easy decision. Yes, there is lots of crap out there, but I can find some good stuff on TV as well, i.e. food network, HGTV, Discovery channel, etc.
TV has got to stay!
Cell phone, it's a luxury for me.
The Internet hasn't quite yet taken the place of Television for information and knowledge transfer so television remains in my home - for now. Then again, my computer uses my television as the screen.
At one point I literally had 2 cell phones and a pager attached to my batman like utility belt. I won't go back to wearing a leash for work or friends... ;)
I want a blackberry so I can do all my communications from one device. I want to leave my computer for work and games.
I could live without my TV. I don't have a home phone so I need my cell. I didn't have the net until about a year ago but I don't think I could go without it now.
I guess the easy one would be my cell phone because We have another phone line ;)
That's very true but giving up the TV would make my youngest cry .
I wouldnt cry but I sure would pout a lot.. LOL !
I thought I would be the only one to say cell phone since they have taken over.
I don't have one now. When my boss ask for the number and then asked why I didn't have one I said "This is exactly why I don't have one. If you want me you pay for the phone."
I used to work in telecom and had an analog mobile back in the day. When work calls exceed personal calls, I let the contract expired. If I'm in an emergency I will flag someone else down with a cell phone. Did I borrow peoples cell phones this weekend when I was trying to track someone down? Yes. I'm one of those cell leaches. But really cell phones are a confidence trick by the telecoms. They don't make you safer or better connected, they bring rings in the middle of difficult traffic :)
I also don't wear a watch. Confidence trick by the swiss. I know when I'm ready to go some place and leave early. I know when I'm hungry. When time is important I will either be near a computer (clock), in the car (clock), or at work (clock). If I'm in a park with no clock I will stay until a clockwearer says it's time to go.
And possibly it's a bit of my tin foil hat peeking out but I don't like carrying a personal radio beacon (mobile phone). Of course at this point I'm probally flagged as that suspcious car without the cell phone in it. :)
Also CSPAN has not embraced the internet (and being a public service of the cabel industry it's doubtful they ever will be).
That's very true but giving up the TV would make my youngest cry .
Well maybe it's time for families to start interacting with each other person to person again instead of through technology, Now this might not imply to you but I'm asking this question to ppl it might apply to, when was the last time you did something as a family in the house when all members are present?
Nowadays, both parents are working (one might have shift work), all family members come home different times, have probably a family meal at the same time once a week, your daughters always on the phone, your son always watching TV or playing computer games in his bedroom..so in essence how many hours do you really see your loved ones per week? do you even really know your child inside and out and how well does your children know you not as a mom or dad with rules but the real you?
Like I said this lifestyle is not everyones and those I am not pointing to probably have good relations with their loved ones, but it is the majority here in Britain and I've met a lot of them.
Isn't it a wonder why there's no communication in the family?
People used to manage before TV and were probably happier, TV is a conversation killer no doubt and is the babysitter and do you even know what your kids are watching without you or your kids realising, just try it for a month and you'll be surprised how kids will get over it
Once a week we have a game night together as a family and we like to pick something out of the home to do together at least once a week together ..when its cold out its sometime going out to eat together or the arcade but when its nice out we take long walks or go to the park but we have a lot of family time . I think TV is OK as long as its balanced with other things .
Just wish all families were like that Mrs Brady and I know there are some like you,but others..well I know quite a lot of them who come home from work, switch the idiot box on and don't event attempt to communicate with their kids.
The Kids are no better, my friends son who's 21 now made me laugh one time I was at my friends house, whilst he was upstairs on his computer and I was chatting with his dad in the kitchen the house phone rang and guess who it was? his son on his mobile asking what time food was ready???WTF, could have just come downstairs and saved his phone bill, doesn't technology make us lazy, a friend of the above arrived in his car to pick my friends son up and instead of knocking on someones door he text instead, christ the car was literally parked next to the front door and it was a sunny day, sometimes I think they are scared of the outside world. When I was a kid, we used to walk for miles exploring our world, these days kids would rather explore video game worlds - god help this generation when there is no electricity
I rarely watch tv and there is nothing on tv that I can't find on internet and watch it (if I want to) through my pc.. So TV would be the first to go..
I travelled a lot and most of my friends do not live near me so cell phone keeps me connected with my loved ones living afar. And as a mom, no matter where I am, my children can reach me, especially for emergencies.
that's a fairly simple question.
I'd give up the television because everything is being ported to phones, and the internet has available most anything on either of the other two. Losing TV doens't mean you don't have TV... it just means I can't play Playstation.
or it means you can't watch network TV.
Who says you can have a TV around and still get rid of TV?
Uh oh I forgot about needing TV for video games! I may need to re-think my answer.
Okay I am unable to give up any of these options. Seriously. I could probably live with out TV, but the the rest of the family would...well let's just say it wouldn't be pretty. Need to keep internet so I can e-mail family and friends. I could never give up cell phones for security & emergencies. If your kids' school has ever been on lock-down you'll understand why both parent & child need a cell phone to communicate.
If your kids' school has ever been on lock-down you'll understand why both parent & child need a cell phone to communicate.
Somehow parents and children have survived between 6000 to 4.2 million yeas (depending on your beliefs) w/o a cell phone. Not much has been intriduced and implemented in our time that makes it more needed, only more wanted.
I took this question on as a test of determining what is a need versus what is a want. Most people tend to confuse the two. Kids constantly say they 'need' a cell phone, but they really don't NEED one. Walking over and saying something isn't a broken idea, pen and paper still work just fine and a little bit of patience demonstrated to call someone a whopping 15-30 minutes later isn't going to change much of anything.
Internet isn't NEEDED. If the web were to completely be wiped away, then what? You might have to learn to form a proper sentence and spell again so that you weren't sending postal mail with a body of:
"Bob,
got ur msg the other wk. Been 2 busy to get over and c the new hse. ne way gtg"
At first I didn't mind that kind of writing, as long as it was on the phone because messages cost to send and recieve (almost as much as it costs to send a letter and in some cases as much as it costs to talk for 2 minutes), but when my younger sister and her friends from school started writing in internet / txtmsg short hand on paper... there's a societal problem brewing.
TV is becoming an outdated technology. It's a stationary box, generally very large in footprint compared to other devices that performt he same actions. In it's current form the device itself is not portable. People brag about having the biggest one in their living room and the smallest one in thier pocket - the only thing people brag about having the samllest of in their pants, no less. The transmission TO the TV are what is portable... so in a way you could see the TV set like a sort of "signal garage" you can take that signal to the phone or the internet pretty easily and the only people who really suffer from never using the TV set is the manufacturers - given that major manufacturers already have their technology in most of the phones anyway... it's really not that big of a hit on or to them.
Removing the TV is the option of least impact on all entities. It is also the device that tends to warp or effect society the least even in the 'on' position.
The average person probably spends just as much time on the internet as they do watching TV, and a cell phone is usually always on, connected to something, streaming something about someone or something. I dunno... I'm not anti-technology, I'm just anti-impractical use of technology, or anti-'becuase it's neat'... so what if the phone can get all of your twitterific tweets - do you really care. deep down? probably not.
I'll definitely agree with these things not being a basic necessity of life but they are fast becoming a need to compete in today's technology based society. The need for these technologies will soon filter through virtually every industry and sector of life. It's already getting to the point where people with out some kind of web presence aren't going to get phone calls anymore. I never crack a phone book because i can just search on-line.
Language constantly evolves and we may come to a point where everyone speaks a testing based form of shorthand. I'm not sure how old you are but I'm sure you can remember words your parents scolded you for using that weren't really words but slowly became part of our language. There may even be a day when written language becomes a thing of the past and books nothing but collectors items.
At first I didn't mind that kind of writing, as long as it was on the phone because messages cost to send and recieve
Y dis shrt txt spk on a cell phone? Man I want my $worth when sending 'where r u? plse phne me' so I write a full 'where are you, please phone me' cos it will only cost the same and still fits into one text
My cell phone is used 99% of the time for work. They track me down everywhere I go, including vacation. I would gladly throw it into the bottom of the ocean, which is what I just might do when I go to Mexico on vacation in May.
Just turn your phone off when on vacation, why does work call you for? something to do with work? tell them to fcuk off I'm on vacation not at work or just don't answer when work calls, thats what I do.
Easy choice. TV. Although it is tough to find live sporting events streamed over the Internet, I can find a lot of what I normally watch on television now online. Thinking about doing it anyway, once the live sports thing gets ironed out.
Neat question, Ms. Cyprah. I'd gladly give up my cell phone. You can have my TV also, though my husband will be crushed. I need my laptop and internet though. I get most of my news online, visit more with friends through email than by phone, do tons of research, listen to iTunes, and oh yeah, work ;)
Reading all the responses has been fun.
Wow, the TV is really losing in that poll!
I already voted with my 'feet' years ago and have been TV-free since 2004. I was only using it for news and to catch an occasional foreign flick.
Now Netflix download movies provide the flicks, and news is on the web.
Well I'm a bit of a pragmatist...so I would get rid of the TV because (a) I can still watch the programs that are worth watching on-line, and (b) The $50 Internet bill is WAY lower than the $200 cable bill.
The second I can get The Tudors, Entourage, Big Love, and Brotherhood online, Comcast can kiss my ass...that cable bill is gone!!!
exactly, that is what I am doing now also.
The last place we lived we had Comcast and we refer to them as "The Evil Empire" alongside Blockbuster. Both of these companies we will never do business with again.
I had Comcast for about 10 month for internet, lets just say I was glad to be rid of them.
Well with package deals , I would get rid of the cell phone and I keep internet , tv and still gots a phone .grins
I would definitely get rid of television as I seldom watch it.
I wont give up internet nor TV.
I don't know with my phone. I like texting and calling but I hate my cell phone.
All I know is that I wont give up Internet and TV. I have square-eyes syndrome. I'd like to keep my television for soap operas, music channels and HBO. I love HBO.
Can I give up 2? Cellphone and TV.
Cellphone because it's mostly work that I get called for, yeah it is good to have in a mall or at the club with the 'where the hell are you calls.' I hardly watch TV these days, most of my entertainment fix comes from the internet .
With Skype you have phone...
With hulu, etc., you have limited tv...
Netflix movies,
News everywhere...
Yes, the internet rules!
It is a shame you cant go with all of the above on that poll, really i just did that for a week and enjoyed every minute of not having someone bug me over something dumb that happened at work, and there isnt much on t.v. worth watching to me nowdays.
There really isn't anything on TV that I can't get on my computer or cell phone. I don't think it will be long before you see a futuristic integration of TV/computer/phone into one digital media and information center. Central computers for your home that deliver entertainment and news and whatever information you want to any of the umpteen monitors in your house.
i hardly use my cell phone ,.it would not be missed
Since I don't have a cell phone it's an easy choice for me :). I don't hardly ever watch t.v. anymore, there's just not much on worth watching. But I'd probably go bananas if I didn't have the internet. I keep in touch with a lot of my family that live pretty far off, in e-mails. That helps keep my phone bill down.
I don't hardly ever watch t.v. anymore, there's just not much on worth watching.
Yes, we've sunk to a reality series about exterminators now. Need one say more?
Even with all the spikey blond/brown streaks i noticed that dudes hair is still a mullet.
I'd say TV most def. My cell phone is like, the only solid way to get ahold of me (not to mention my texting addiction), and sans internet would mean sans Facebook, and thats like, not even a question. Need Facebook. Neeeeed it. :P
dang, sounds like you have a problem, LOL!
Television. I can watch enough TV online.
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
