A Speeding Ticket? Just Kidding!

advertisement

The Associated Press reports that police officers in Rancho Cordova, Calif., a suburb of Sacramento, plan to pull drivers over during the holidays to give them — not tickets or warnings, but $5 Starbucks gift certificates, as rewards for good driving.

Stopping law-abiding drivers for no good reason was the department's idea, to "promote the holiday spirit and enhance goodwill between the traffic unit and the motoring public," Sgt. Tim Curran told the A.P.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I think it is an excellent idea to actually reward good drivers with some praise. Everyone knows that being a good driver should be automatic, but why give the attention all the time to punishment, when everyone likes some attention sometimes. Good psychological move, that!

I do not want anything to do with any police person. If they wish to reward me, send it in the mail. I do not want the apprehension about what possibly could they be stopping me for. I did not speed, run a light, make an unsafe lane change. Just leave me alone. I would be worrying if I was about to be another driver flopping on the road from a taser because the cop was having a bad day.

It would NOT promote good relations. I would make me mad for having my day interrupted for no good reason.

I agree dr Know, the best thing the cops can do for me is leave me alone.
